#8 — SOUND, VIBRATION & SLEEP
How Sound and Vibration Influence Sleep
INTRODUCTION
Sound and vibration directly interact with the brain and nervous system, which regulate the processes involved in sleep. Research has shown that music, auditory stimulation and other forms of sound can affect sleep quality, sleep onset, sleep duration and sleep-related brain activity.
Scientists have studied how different types of sound and auditory stimulation affect sleep in both healthy people and people experiencing sleep difficulties. This research helps identify the sound characteristics and methods of delivery that produce measurable effects on sleep.
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH & PUBLISHED STUDIES
Systematic review: auditory stimulation and sleep
A systematic review of 34 studies involving 1,103 participants examining how auditory stimulation—including white noise, pink noise and multiaudio approaches—affects sleep. The review found positive sleep outcomes in 19 of the 34 studies, with particularly consistent benefits reported for pink noise.
A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Acoustic Stimulation in the Treatment of Insomnia
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of 8 studies involving 419 participants found that acoustic stimulation significantly improved insomnia severity and sleep quality, including significant improvements in PSQI and ISI scores. The researchers concluded that acoustic stimulation was effective in improving sleep-related outcomes.
Music-Based Intervention for Improving Sleep Quality of Adults Without Sleep Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
A systematic review and meta-analysis of 22 studies involving 1,514 participants examining music-based interventions and sleep quality. The researchers found that longer-term music interventions produced improvements in sleep quality, although results varied among studies.
Can Music Improve Sleep Quality in Adults With Primary Insomnia? A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis
A systematic review and network meta-analysis of 20 clinical trials involving 1,339 adults with primary insomnia. The analysis found that music interventions significantly improved sleep quality, with listening to music and music-associated relaxation showing benefits for sleep quality and sleep onset.
Effect of Music Therapy on Sleep Quality in Elderly: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of 10 studies involving 602 participants found that music therapy significantly improved sleep quality in older adults. The analysis included six randomized controlled trials and four non-randomized studies; although the overall evidence was rated very low certainty because of risk of bias and substantial variation among studies, the randomized trials also showed a significant improvement in sleep quality.
